Burgas Wastewater Treatment Plant – Burgas Metropolitan Area

The wastewater treatment plant was built before 1987. In 2008, it was renovated, and technology for the removal of nitrogen and phosphorus was implemented in accordance with European environmental requirements. In 2022, “VIK” EAD, Burgas, is implementing a project titled: “Integrated Water Project for the Burgas Region,” which includes the reconstruction of the sludge line at the Burgas Wastewater Treatment Plant. The treatment plant has been transferred to “Water Supply and Sewerage” EAD, Burgas, for management, maintenance, and operation.
The “Burgas” WWTP serves the city of Burgas, the Dolno Ezerovo neighborhood, and the Lozovo neighborhood, and has a design capacity of 397,745 PE. The permitted annual limit is 43,771,968 m³/y.

The main treatment stages and facilities along the water and sludge flow path are:
• primary treatment—fine screens (3 units), screw press, sand and grease traps, primary clarifiers (2 units);
• biological treatment—three-channel biological tanks with pneumatic aeration—3 units;
• secondary clarifiers—3 units;
• treatment plants for activated sludge, treatment plants for mixed excess activated sludge and primary sludge, and treatment plants connected to methane tanks;
• methane tanks—2 units, converted into open digesters;
• sludge thickeners for washed sludge—2 units, and for digested sludge—2 units;
• Alfa Laval decanter centrifuges—2 units; sludge drying fields covering 15 decares and 2 units for sand; a treatment plant for sand slurry;
• a reagent storage facility for chemical dephosphatization with FeCl₃. A SCADA system was installed in 2009. The system is monitored and controlled locally and can also be controlled via the Internet.

The treated water is discharged into Lake Vaya (Burgas Lake).
